When a cat is in nature...

...all sort of things can happen!
I had lots of fun creating this painting. It started like a close up of a watermelon, then it got a layer of plaster, then some squiggles , then another layer of plaster, and then this cat, tree and birdy just came about. I like the textures I came up with and the handling of the colors on the cat. They make him look solid and monumental!

I am working on this new technique using gesso and acrylics.
Watermelons are considered to be the national fruits of Mexico (as they have the colors of the flag in them). Here is an example painted by Mexican muralist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991). Tamayo's depictions of watermelons are famous all over the world.

New media

I am trying to combine gesso, acrylics, pastels and indian ink in this piece. Perhaps it is too busy as there are many things going on, but I am trying to get a feel for combining different medias on canvas. It is more of a test and try exercise than anything else.

Still-lifes "a la Mexicana"

Naturaleza Muerta ó Bodegón is the name for still-life in Spanish. There is a Latin-American tradition when it comes to creating still-lifes. The depictions might include: daily life objects, local fruits and foods. Colors tend to be brighter than in European paintings and sometimes artists go for the "faux-naive" effect. These are examples created by yours-truly. Next I will be working on a Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) piece as that time of the year is approaching.

Invitation to dinner

September in Mexico is known as "The Independence Month". Mexicans celebrate the independence from Spain on September 15th each year with dinners where there is plenty of spicy delicious food, mariachi music and tequila shots. This is an invitation I created using Illustrator.

Scottish Dance Logo

Have you ever practiced Scottish dancing? Recently I was asked to create a logo for the local association, so here it is. The mountain on the background of the logo symbolizes Mount Ventoux which is the most famous natural site in this region.

New Month-New Projects

Wow! Time flies and now the summer is over... So it is back to blogging about projects and pieces currently being developed.
I am starting to experiment with acrylics, gesso and collage.... I don't know if I like the gesso on canvas technique.
I have done two pieces today. The first one is called "Sandias" and it measures 20cmx20cm.
I think it is still a work in progress, maybe I shall add another layer to it, as I find it a bit dull.

The second piece is called "Blue Dreams" and measures 30cmX30cm. The first picture shows an earlier stage of the piece where you can see more of the writing "etched" on the gesso and the basic form of the girl.

This is the final piece. I find that the composition and the technique are working much better here (but then this time I did not started with a layer of printed paper). Plus I really like the echoes of the forms in the piece. This was not intentional, I just realized that I have repeated the forms after I was done.

J-4 (or only 4 days to go until the opening

In France when people do a countdown they write the dates as J (for Jour) minus and then the numbers of day left.
Well, according to this system, it is J-4 for this artist!!!
Currently coloring hair...and as I wait... I post!LOL!
Here's another sneak peek at the exhibition.
Introducing: Another version of BlueGirl...but this one belong to a triptych.

The countdown has started!

Only 6 days and the exhibition will be officially opened. There is still plenty for me to do, and working a full-time job plus having daily activities afterwards doesn't leave me much free time but there is no turning back!!!!! And so I keep plugging along...
The picture shows the two posters that I created today in order to advertise the exhibition on the outside of the venue.

Exhibition coming-up!!!!

Voila!!!! The poster for my upcoming exhibition is here and you are ALL invited to drop by for some sangria and some tapas. The opening will take place at 19h at the community center in the town of Bedoin (Vaucluse, France). I am very excited to let you know that this exhibition will be a collaborative effort between me and a young Catalan painter named Stela Ochoa. She is currently working on her own blog, so as soon as it is ready I will post a link to it. She will be presenting her oils on and I will be showing my pastels.

The name of the exhibition is "Encuentros" and we are hoping to give to the opening a friendly, warm Spanish flavor to it. So if you are around, stop by and come toast with us to the success of the venture.

Introducing: BlueGirl!

Since I was little I used to admire superheroes such as Wonderwoman and Jamie Sommers (aka The Bionic Woman). Then, there was the time in college when I used to collect the comics of the somewhat neurotic Cathy... Afterall it was the 80s and I am giving my age away...
So here is my alter-ego and her name is BlueGirl.
BlueGirl is silly, somewhat neurotic, with the head in the clouds most of the time and a total cat freak. On top of that she is addicted to Cinema, blogging and listening to audiobooks on her purple ipod.

I created this illustration for a birthday gathering thatI will be hosting this coming sunday. If you want to see more of my sketches you can go to

Shhhh!... His magesty is sleeping!

From this image we can deduct two things:
Number one: I am a messy artist...
Number two: Edouard, decides now and then to nap on my work area, even when I am actually working on something at the time. I think that the he is the actual king of my humble castle and he knows it!
